11 May Adrift
A metaphor for erosion, this piece honours the shipbuilding and steel working industries of days gone by. The Euskalduna engineering company is a symbol of a former industrial age; going through ups and downs, passing into decadence and an ultimate end beside the Nervión river. “Adrift” looks openly towards the Estuary, the Promenade, and the stunning iron façade of the Euskalduna Conference Centre. Its instability and existential weight is supported, aspiring to be part of that memory, an aesthetic body from a previous era and at the same time a metaphor for an industrial age, of its struggle to survive, progressive erosion, and ultimate end beside the Estuary that witnessed its birth. It is constructed from 42 millimetre thick compact steel hoops that form swirling shapes in the air, giving the sensation of coming crashing down from a height of 5 metres.
