CONVOCATORIA: Babestu. An extraordinary contemporary creation support programme. Azkuna Zentroa
Azkuna Zentroa – Alhóndiga Bilbao, Bilbao City Council Society and Contemporary Culture Centre launches Babestu. An extraordinary contemporary creation support programme. It is a call to foster creation aimed at local cultural agents and artists so that they can continue carrying out their processes and research affected by the COVID-19 crisis.
One of the main aims of the Azkuna Zentroa 2019-2023 Programme Project is to foster and support contemporary creation, as reflected in both its programme and the actions lines undertaken.
Under this new programme, a maximum of 10 artistic, creative and cultural projects, which explore new ways of carrying out artistic practices and are in dialogue with Azkuna Zentroa programme lines (contemporary art, live arts, film and audio-visuals, digital cultures, literature and society), will be selected to be developed and presented at Azkuna Zentroa.
Babestu. An extraordinary contemporary creation support programme is framed within Lantegia. Laboratory of Ideas, in the third building of Azkuna Zentroa. This centre deals with the production and visualisation of artistic projects, fostering participation, creation, innovation, knowledge, accessibility and diversity. In short, it is a centre for the professionalization of the arts sector and the Cultural and Creative Industries.
Azkuna Zentroa wishes to foster support and diffusion of creation and contemporary culture through Babestu, stimulating the exchange of experiences, ideas and views, likewise supporting the local creative fabric in its multidiscipline and transversal dimension.
This exceptional call not only seeks to be a tool to serve artists in the undertaking of creative projects linked to the programme and Azkuna Zentroa action lines, but also to facilitate people’s introduction to contemporary artistic reflection and create discussions positioning culture as a transformation tool. The call will prioritize the selection of projects meeting these requirements, with emphasis not so much on the end product but rather on its execution.
Apart from Azkuna Zentroa´s support, advice and mediation, the people selected will also receive 6,000 euros.
Registration deadline for this call is 31st July via the Centre web: www.azkunazentroa.eus. An Assessment Commission comprising people from the Azkuna Zentroa team and other experts with an acknowledged professional career in the artistic sector will analyse the projects.
Residency programme extension
Furthermore, Azkuna Zentroa is going ahead with the other creation support calls it launches annually. This is the case of the BideOtik. Attending to other audiovisual narratives programme, aimed at making visible artistic and cultural audiovisual creation as a creation, reflection and social transformation tool; fostering the use of new languages via moving images; and consolidating Azkuna Zentroa as a meeting place for the interaction of the different agents taking part in the audiovisual creative chain.
Azkuna Zentroa has launched a new call aimed at artists and video creators whose medium for developing their works around video expression is the audiovisual.
In the first edition, over 300 local and international works were presented, such as documentary feature films and shorts, among which cartoons, biopics and family stories, including some first-timers, stood out.
In a different context to the first edition and as part of the artistic creation support actions required in the current situation, BIdeOtik. Attending to other audiovisual narratives proposes the creation of works using archive images, memory or digital creation.
The works chosen will be screened in February and March 2021 in the usual BIdeOtik. Attending to other audiovisual narratives format, i.e. a space connecting audiovisual creation and society, where each author presents his/her work and shares the processes of his/her project with the audience.
Los works can be sent between 15th June and 30th September 2020 via the Festhome platform or Email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Under this action plan aimed at stimulating creation, the Centre ramps up its Az Kideak – Associated Artists and Researchers’ programme, the first of its kind in the Basque context, with the incorporation of artistic researcher Aimar Arriola.
Likewise, the call for Artistic Practices and Dance Residencies’ which connects the local creative fabric with international cultural environments looking for reciprocal long-term exchanges, relationships and collaborations, is being extended to April 2021.
The Azkuna Zentroa Artistic Practices Residency fosters exchange between artists from Cuba and the Basque Country via a research period in both spaces favouring research and work in different artistic and local contexts. This residency is run in collaboration with the Artista x Artista programme, carried out in La Habana by the Estudio Carlos Garaicoa. The person chosen in Bilbao will do stage one of the residency in Cuba in the second half of the year, and stage two at Azkuna Zentroa, after the summer. At the same time, both Estudio Carlos Garaicoa and Azkuna Zentroa – Alhóndiga Bilbao will choose a Cuban artist to undertake a similar journey and dialogue with the resident artist in Bilbao during his/her stay at the Centre.
The Contemporary Dance Residency is carried out in collaboration with the dance exhibition and creation centre Dansateliers, Rotterdam (Netherlands). This residency is aimed at dance professionals and is carried out in two stages. The first stage works the creation and research process of a choreography at Azkuna Zentroa (Bilbao). Stage two is at the Dansateliers installations in Rotterdam and, during the same, the resident will receive artistic advice and mentoring from the Dansateliers’ team to carry out his/her work. At the same time, Dansateliers, Rotteredam will choose a choreographer linked to the Dutch context to undertake a similar journey and dialogue with the resident chosen in this call.
In addition to the artistic practices and contemporary dance residencies, Azkuna Zentroa is working on opening new networks and projects such as the International Comic Residency,to be launched in the near future in collaboration with 2 references like the Quebec House of Literature (Canada) and the International City of Comics and Images in Angoulême (France). Under this programme, 3 authors will undertake their projects jointly at the 3 headquarters: Angoulême, Quebec and Bilbao.
This is a pioneering experience in the Basque Country and is the starting point of an international cultural programme aimed at boosting creativity in the field of graphic works and accompanying authors in their creative processes. The purpose of the agreement is to foster creation in the field of comics and facilitate the meeting between people from different countries in key professional environments of this discipline, connecting with artists of other contemporary artistic disciplines.
Furthermore, Azkuna Zentroa is ultimating its collaboration with Atelíê Fidalga Project, São Paulo (Brazil) to launch a new residency of artistic practices. The idea is to have an artist doing training practice in Bilbao over the forthcoming months while a Basque one could enjoy this residency in São Paulo in 2021.
The ‘Resident Collective’ programme is also being expanded as part of the action plan to support creation and artists. Two local collectives will reside in the Centre for the next 2 years.
Azkuna Zentroa will shortly be opening the call for the presentation of communications in the fourth meeting of the International Symposium on Curating ‘The Papers of the Exhibition (1977-2017)’, to be held in October. Organised in collaboration between Bulegoa z/b and Azkuna Zentroa – Alhóndiga Bilbao, this symposium analyses specific exhibitions held between 1977 and 2017. Its purpose is to look back on exhibitions, texts and events from the recent past which continue to resonate today and help us understand it.
