EXHIBITION: Colección María Josefa Huarte. Collective

María Josefa Huarte
Bilbao Fine Arts Museum
Thanks to the generosity of the Navarre University Museum, in the summer the general public will be able to enjoy in our museum a large portion of the María Josefa Huarte collection, a collection that comprises a total of 47 works by 19 artists. A unique example of a private collection, it should be understood in the context of the art collecting and patronage undertaken by the Huarte family mainly between the decades of 1950 and 1970.

The collection was begun in the late 1950s, essentially following their personal taste, favouring geometric and abstract art, firstly including the noteworthy groups of works by Jorge Oteiza, Pablo Palazuelo and Antoni Tàpies, both for the quality of the pieces, as well as for the way in which they bear witness to the development of each of the artists. Later, the Huarte family focused on prominent authors, such as Eduardo Chillida, Mark Rothko, Wassily Kandinsky, Luis Feito, Manolo Millares, and even one Picasso from his final period. María Josefa Huarte understood abstraction as an aesthetic path towards modernity and, in turn, as an inner, personal, spiritual journey.
