In his seven decades as an artist, Richard Artschwager (b. 1923; d. 2013) constructed a unique path for the art of his time. Decidedly focused on rigorously understanding space and the daily objects that occupy and structure it, Artschwager managed to express himself with multiple materials at a halfway point between painting and sculpture, meanwhile critically setting himself apart from the Minimalist works that dominated the art scene of the 1960s and 1970s. This anthological exhibition analyzes Artschwager’s creative career through more than sixty works of art that convey the heart of his research, tracing an arc from his beginnings in the 1950s up until the first decade of the current century. A fundamental aspect of the artist’s work is the representation—a hybrid between the two-dimensional and the three-dimensional—of utensils and furniture, as well as the use of recently-invented industrial materials such as Formica, celotex, or aluminum. Providing a unique interpretation of Artschwager’s work through various theme-based groupings, the exhibition will allow visitors to transversely and comparatively observe the most representative series of a production equally charged with humor and grandeur.
