Francisco Durrio
1933

A work by the sculptor Francisco Durrio de Madrón, this sculpture is dedicated to the musician Juan Crisóstomo Arriaga to mark the centenary of his birth. It combines architectural elements and allegorical figures. Melpomene, who mourns the early death of Arriaga, was chosen for the figure. According to the information sheets handed out during the inauguration “The Muse of Art experiences infinite grief due to the premature death of the Genius”. She holds a lyre to her chest, and water flows from it. In 1948 it was withdrawn from the general view of the Bilbao public, and then in 1975 it was placed at the museum entrance.
